Wrestling:

Wrestling is widely recognised as the world is oldest competitive sport. It is a sport in which two contestants attempt to force each othe is shoulders to the floor, thus scoring a fall and winning the match.

If a wrestler cannot score a fall within the time limit, a winner is determined based on a point-scoring system. When the ancient Games of the Olympiad were born, wrestling was already there. The first Olympic Games was comprised of eight sports, with every athlete competing in all eight. Wrestling was the final and ultimate sport, as a true test of strength and skill. There are currently five styles of amateur wrestling which are practiced, each with separate rules, techniques, and emphasis. These five styles are: Folkstyle, Freestyle, Judo, Sombo, and Greco-Roman. Greco-Roman wrestling included in the first Olympic Games in 1896. Freestyle wrestling was added in 1904. The International wrestling federation FILA is established in Stockholm in 1912.

Olympic-style wrestling:

wrestlingOlympic-style wrestling matches consist of a 1-period, five-minute match. A match is completed if a wrestler scores a fall, or if at the end of the regulation time, 1 wrestler has scored more points. Under current rules, if neither wrestler scores at least 3 points in the 5 minutes allotted for the match then the wrestlers must go into an overtime period of a maximum of 3 minutes. If neither wrestler has scored 3 points at the end of the overtime, or if the bout is still drawn, the officials determine the winner.

Folkstyle:

Folkstyle was developed in the US, and is not used in international competition. Folkstyle concentrates on control, with points awarded for controlling an opponent for lengths of time longer then when under control. Folkstyle is similar to Freestyle in that for some of the time both wrestlers are on their feet and attempting to take each other to the mat in order to gain control.

Freestyle:

Freestyle wrestlingThe rules of freestyle wrestling allow a wrestler to use his entire body in competition, allowing a much greater variety of holds than in the Greco-Roman style. Holds below the waist and the use of the legs are allowed. One more very important point about both Freestyle and Greco-Roman is that there is no penalty for failed moves. If a wrestler attempts a takedown and ends up being taken down by his opponent, his opponent does not score points.

Greco-Roman:

Greco-Roman is the oldest wrestling style, and very popular in some parts of the world. Greco-Roman wrestling is especially popular in Europe. The distinctive feature of Greco-Roman wrestling is that contestants must apply all holds above the waist, and the use of the legs in scoring or defending is prohibited. Tripping, tackling, and using the legs to secure a hold are not permitted. Freestyle and Greco-Roman, in addition to Judo, are recognized Olympic sports.

Judo:

judoIt is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat. It is an oriental style of wrestling which concentrates on throwing your opponent off his feet and into a position of back control or submission. It was developed by Dr Jigoro Kano in the 1880s and introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 at Tokyo. Wrestling consists of one five minute period, with both wrestlers starting on their feet. If one wrestler is taken down or thrown, wrestling continues for a short time to see if a pin can be achieved.

Sombo:

Sombo is an acronym for the Russian phrase "self-defense without weapons". It is a self-defense oriented style of jacket wrestling which incorporates techniques from both JUDO and freestyle/Greco-Roman wrestling. It is the system of hand-to-hand fighting used by Soviet Spetsnaz (Special Forces) Troops. Sombo Wrestling is a competitive sport which includes the most dangerous locking and choking techniques.

In any of such sports the ultimate fighter is the ones who not only has physical strengths but also the mental capacity and strenght to access the situations and keep control on himself. A true fighter has to keep all his focus on his game and his opponent so that at no single time he gives him an opportunity to win.
