Martial Arts:

The history of the martial arts is complex. The beginnings of karate is believed to have its origins in India with a man named Bodhiharma. Martial Art exercises originally were for physical fitness only but later became a form of self defense as well. The people of different regions developed their own methods of offense and defense. karateThere are many different forms of martial arts and each has its own unique beginnings. The basis for Shaolin boxing or kung fu was introduced in 540 AD, when an Indian Monk named Bodhidharma traveled to northern China to lecture on Buddhism. He created an external form emphasizing the limbering of joints, bones and muscles, mobility and unity of hard and soft. This method of training was enriched by the traditional Chinese martial arts.
The early Greek culture practiced a martial art known as Pankration, the art of complete strength. The art itself is comprised of styles including wrestling, grappling, and throws as well as boxing techniques.The evidences reveal that Pankration was being practiced around 700 BC.

Capoeira is an energetic, dance-like style of martial art. In Capoeira, many movements are carried out while in a handstand position. Capoeira was first practiced by African slaves who were taken to work in Brazil. One commonality among all of the worlds fighting arts is that they arose out of a need for self-defense.
