History of Hockey:

Hockey is the earliest known ball and stick game to exist. The name Hockey comes from the French word hocquet, or the shepherd's crooked stick. The Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Persians and Ethiopians all played variations of the game.
Field hockey evolved in the British Isles in the 19th century. The British army helped spread hockey internationally through the British Empire. Blackheath Football and Hockey Club was founded in London in 1861. The London Hockey Association formed in 1886. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) formed in Paris in 1924.
Hockey in India:
Hockey became popular in India when the British Regiments played the game in India. The first hockey club was formed in Calcutta in 1885-86 followed by Bombay and Punjab. The Bengal Hockey was the first Hockey Association in India founded in 1908.
Field Hockey
"Field Hockey" is now played at global level with many nations competing in the three major competitions - The Olympic Games, The World Cup and The Champion's Trophy. Hockey was first played at the Olympic Games in 1908 when men's teams were included. Women's hockey was not included in the Olympics until 1980. In the Olympic games, India played hockey for the first time in 1928 held in Amsterdam. India is the most powerful field hockey nation in Olympic history. Between 1928 and 1956, India won six gold medals and 30 consecutive games.
Game:
Hockey is played by two teams of eleven players. The aim of hockey is to score more goals than the opponent team and to do this players use their hockey sticks to propel the ball toward the team's goal. The hockey field or pitch is a rectangular field 60 yards wide and 100 yds long (54.90m by 91.50m). Field is divided by a centre line and a 25-yard line in each half of the field. The goals are 12 feet (3.66 m) wide and 7 feet (2.13 m) high. Hockey games are played in two 35 minute halves with a five to ten minute break at half time.
The hockey stick is approximately one metre long with a curved end, is flat on one side and rounded on the other. The stick is made from hardwood (metals are forbidden) and usually has a laminated handle. The maximum weight of a hockey stick can be 28 ounce. The size and weight of the ball is same as that of a cricket ball and is covered by a thin layer of plastic to keep it waterproof.
