History of Cycling:
History of cycling is still mystry for many. The history of cycling begins with the history of the bicycle. Bicycle was the first running machine which made individual mobility possible. Bicycle was invented in 1817 by Baron von Drais. The first recorded bicycle race was a 1,200-meter event held on May 31, 1868, in St.-Cloud Park, near Paris. During the 1870s, many bicycle clubs were established in the United States.
Cycling opened up new horizons for people in the nineteenth century by allowing them to travel beyond their home community - this was especially important for women, and can be seen now also in the developing world. Bicycles became a popular form of transportation from the early 1930's when a combination of rising wages and falling production costs finally made bicycles affordable for working people.
Competitive cycling provided one of the earliest forms of mass spectator sport in modern times. Cycling has been an important part of the Olympics since the first modern Games in 1896. Cycling has two main racing categories: road and track. Most professional races were conducted on tracks. To promote various bicycle models, bicycle companies began hiring racers. Within a short time, virtually all professional racing was done on enclosed tracks, where admission could be charged, while most amateur racing was done on the road, though there were some amateur track races. The first International Cycling History Conference was instituted in 1990 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Tips for cyclists:
» Keep brakes in good condition.
»You
should use a cycle path, if there is one. Otherwise, you must ride on the road. Keep as far left as you safely can.
»Ensure that your cycle's front and rear lights are lit and your cycle should also have an efficient red rear reflector when cycling at night.
»Stop when asked to do so by a police officer or traffic warden.
