History of basketball:
Basket Ball game originated in 1891 by James Naismith with 13 rules. James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor. He worked at the Y.M.C.A. College at Springfield, Massachusetts and the 1st official basketball match was played at the Springfield, MA YMCA Training School. The rules for this game were formalised in 1892. Basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. Basketball is now a truly global game with 212 countries forming FIBA.
Requiremets:
Basketball is a team sport. It involves five players and two teams. The game is played on rectangular, indoor court. The ball is spherical in shape and is inflated. Two elevated baskets, one at each end (in the long direction) of the court are reqiured in order to play this game. Size of Basket-ball ranges from 28.5-30 in (72-76 cm) in circumference, and in weight from 18-22 oz (510-624 g).
The goal of each team is to score in the opposing team is basket. A goal is scored when a player throws the ball into the opponent's basket. Goals worth two points. A foul means violation of the rules. Once a team has gathered four fouls in a quarter, the opponent team is given two free throws for any other fouls accumulated in that half.
Rules:
The 13 original Rules of Basketball game are listed below:
» The ball can be thrown in any direction with 1 or both hands.
» The ball can be batted in any direction with 1 or both hands, but not with the fist.
» A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw the ball from the spot on which he catches it.
» The ball must be held in the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it.
» No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping an opponent.
» A foul is made on striking at the ball with the fist.
» If a side makes 3 consecutive fouls it counts a goal for the opponents.
» A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the ground into the basket and stays there.
» When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the 1st person touching it.
» The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when 3 consecutive fouls have been made.
» The referee shall be the judge of the ball and decide when it is in play in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time.
» The time shall be 2 fifteen minute halves with 5 minutes' rest between.
» The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner.
