The history of sports goes back to vedic era. In early india the games that were played are like chariot-racing, horsemanship, wrestling, weight-lifting, archery, swimming, and hunting. Many of the today's games are sophisticated versions of the games that were originated in ancient india.
Cricket originated in south eastern england and was brought to India by Britishers. Today's bat was invented around 1853. By the beginning of the 19th century the game was being played in the cities of Mumbai, calcutta, and Chennai. India played its first official test against England in 1932. The main countries which took part in this game are India, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Australia, West Indies, South Africa. There are total of 32 countries which are member of ICC.
The origins of soccer are very difficult to trace. One of the earliest recorded forms of soccer occurred in the year 1004 B.C. in Japan.
In 1863, the Football Association was formed and a standard set of rules were adopted by the organization. In 1904 the Federation Internationale de Football Association, better known as FIFA was established. more than 140 nations have joined the soccer federation.
Hockey is the game of speed, stamina and skill. 
It is the oldest known ball-and-stick game. Hockey is the national game of india. The first hockey club in india was formed in Calcutta in 1885-86 followed by Bombay and Punjab. The Bengal Hockey was the first Hockey Association in India founded in 1908. The Golden Phase of hockey in India was from 1928 - 1956 when India won 6 consecutive gold medals in the Olympics.
